Your Options:

In your search through over the counter acne treatment though, one thing you’ll find is that a lot of them contain the same ingredients, namely benzoyl peroxide or salycic acid.  One thing you can try is asking the pharmacist which is the best treatment that they currently sell, often times they have been asked the same kinds of questions by other customers and have a general idea of what is the popular choice.

Alternatives:

Now if you don’t want to go for over the counter treatment, your alternatives are basically herbal or all natural treatments.  These include things such as tea tree oil, aloe vera , witch hazel and the like.  In fact there are just as many all natural methods to try out as there are store bought remedies and it will do you some good to check those out as well as they often have less side effects.

1.    Oatmeal Mask

Sounds like a crazy pimple treatment, but the oatmeal works by removing excess oil from the skin as well as removing the impurities from your clogged pores.  Just cook some up and let it cool down to room temperature.  Now take the oatmeal, which should be a paste and apply that to your face.  Leave it on for about ½ hour before washing it off.  Use this twice a day if you want to see the best results from it.

1.     Make Sure It Exfoliates

If you’re going for an acne treatment cream, you should make sure that it also exfoliates your skin since doing so will help the cream to fully penetrate your pores and eliminate more of the acne causing bacteria and sebum oils. 

2.     Make Sure It’s Anti-Bacterial

This is pretty much assured, but it’s a good idea to look at the potentcy of the anti-bacterial agents.  If for instance you’re looking at benzoyl peroxide, you will notice this comes in varying concentrations.  You can pick it up at 2%, 5% or even 10%.

Lastly, you’ll want to see if it contains any ingredients which will help fix pigmentation issues on your skin due to old acne scars.  Retinol is one such treatment which does a good job of evening out your skin tone.

Use A Good Acne Body Wash

There are many body washes available, Neutrogena, Murad, or even good old OXY bodywash.  All of them are relatively decent, they all contain either benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid as their main ingredients and work to remove excess oil and kill off bacteria deep inside of your pores. 

Head on over to your local drugstore and pick up any one of the above, it’s hard to say which will work best because people report success with different treatments. 

How To Use It:

When you do in fact pick it up, what you want to do is wet a loofa then apply the wash directly on the loofa.  Use this to apply it so that you not only administer the medication, but you also exfoliate the skin thus making it easier for the medication to do it’s job.  Don’t rub it on for too long though, you don’t want to leave your skin red and overly irritated.

When You’re Done:

When you’re finished and have towel dried, it’s a good idea to re-apply another acne medication containing benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid to ensure enough is on you to really do it’s job.  This Is especially true if you have moderate to severe acne.
